Gameplay shortcomings are actually more apparent in single-player mode, given it's just you against the world. For starters, the enemy AI (or lack thereof) is somewhat startling. Humanoid enemies tend to stand around waiting for you to attack; often you can run right up to them and get in their fugly faces before they react. In other words, the AI is about on-par with World of Warcraft, too. They run their routines and that's about it. In co-up, you'll be so busy blasting your way through the chaos that it won't matter. Again, it just underlines how multiplayer-centric Borderlands' design actually is. The vehicular combat is great fun – but with unlimited rockets, the thing is overpowered. Given that you earn vehicles quite early in the campaign, it's easy to blast your way through a few of the combat-oriented missions with ease. In general, balance in Borderlands is really good; the Warcraftian structure means that missions are broken down by level, which gives you a good at-a-glance idea of whether you're going to get pummelled or not, or whether to attempt it solo or with a party. Really, Gearbox should be applauded for including split-screen gaming, in addition to online and system link, too. More developers should take note of this flexibility. Closing Comments With so much hoo-hah over the surprise redesign, it's funny to think that this little gem could've easily have slipped under the radar; the gameplay is identical, after all. As it stands, by emulating some RPG standards and reapplying them to the gorgeous setting, Borderlands actually manages to stand out. This is a significant thing, we think.
